A family friend just told my mom, “It’s so great that your daughter isn’t afraid of anything.” Which was really nice — and also shows how wildly misleading social media can be.

Because I’m afraid of freaking everything. I hate flying. I hate spicy rappel starts. I wear my helmet on class 2+ scrambles. Overseas, I worry about getting bitten by rabid dogs and Japanese B encephalitis. I’m convinced everything I eat is going to poison me.

You probably can’t tell from Instagram and Facebook. But it’s true.

A Quick Start Guide to Safer Adventuring With SPOT

Here’s how I became the proud owner of a SPOT Gen3.

Earlier this summer, my friend and I got lost en route to a trailhead and ended up driving on the world’s scariest shelf road. We’re talking a cliff face on one side and a thousand-foot drop on the other. Seriously, this thing belonged in freakin’ Bolivia.

The good news was that it led to another trailhead. So rather than driving back over the shelf road in the gathering dark, we could just camp and hike there. But there was a problem.
